Every Christmas has a mood. Some years it's bright and nostalgic, others it's pared back and Scandinavian. You can feel it in the shop windows, the tablescapes on your feed and, most of all, under the tree. This year, the mood is deeper, bolder and a little more playful than it has been in a long time.
To find out where holiday style is heading, we went to the people who decide what fills the shops each December. We looked at the trends from Christmasworld, the world's leading trade fair for festive decoration, where retailers buy their Christmas collections every January in Frankfurt, and at Home Accents Today’s report from the show floor. We added the search data behind Pinterest Predicts 2026 and the 2026 Pinterest Palette, Etsy’s holiday trend report and the Selfridges Christmas Shop, which opened in September. Then we translated it all into something you can actually wrap.
The Short Answer
The 2026 holiday gift wrapping trends at a glance
Deep colour, graphic contrast and a lot of personality. The eight looks to know:
- Reds Run Deep: wine, mulberry and plum replace bright red
- Black & White Christmas: checkerboards, vintage sketches and graphic type
- The Neutral Christmas: chocolate, camel, cream and winter white
- Big on Bows: oversized, sculptural bows on everything
- Animal Magnetism: bears, reindeer and whimsical creatures
- Highland Romance: deep Scottish tartans and lodge-style warmth
- Nutcrackercore: ballet, velvet ribbon and jewel tones
- City Christmas: skylines, brownstones and snowy streets

Deep Red Wrapping Paper
Reds Run Deep
At Christmasworld this year, one message was impossible to miss: Christmas red has darkened. Home Accents Today reported deep reds with purple undertones, wine and mulberry, "a lot of jewel tones, deep colors… very saturated", while last year's pastel pinks faded away. Pinterest agrees. Its 2026 Palette names Plum Noir, "a rich, deep purple" with "notes of burnt burgundy", as one of the defining colours of the year.
How to style it: let the depth of the colour do the work. Finish with a gold velvet ribbon, or a blush silk ribbon for softer contrast, and tuck a sprig of dried eucalyptus under the bow. Prefer no pattern at all? A solid colour is just as on trend. A single deep shade like our Oxblood or Bordeaux wrapped with a crisp crease looks every bit as expensive.
Black and White Gift Wrap
Black & White Christmas
The most fashion-forward look at Christmasworld was also the simplest. Black and white arrived in checkerboards, stripes and graphic prints, right down to black nutcrackers, with a modern, slightly gothic edge. Under the tree, it looks like a gift from a Paris boutique.
How to style it: keep the paper monochrome and add one flash of colour: a single red satin ribbon or a red wax seal on the tag. Or go fully black with a black velvet ribbon for the most dramatic gift in the room.

House Rule
“Black and white needs just one colour. Choose it, then stop.”
Neutral Christmas Wrapping Paper
The Neutral Christmas
For those who find red and green too loud, Christmasworld offered a gentler palette: earthy browns, beiges, cream and wintry whites, which Home Accents Today called cosy, comforting and familiar. It echoes the fair's wider "Solid" theme of neutral whites and pared-back design. It's quiet luxury, dressed for December.
How to style it: layer textures instead of colours. Pair chocolate with cream, tie with natural linen ribbon or twine, and finish with a dried orange slice or a sprig of pine.
Oversized Gift Bows
Big on Bows
If one detail defined this year's show, it was the bow. Home Accents Today saw bows everywhere at Christmasworld: oversized, stuffed and sculptural, perched on treetops and even sculpted into ceramics. On a gift, that means the bow is no longer an afterthought. It's the whole statement.
How to style it: go big with a wide satin ribbon of at least two inches, tie a generous bow and cut the tails long on the diagonal. Or let the paper carry the bows, and finish with a slim ribbon so the two don't compete.

Animal Christmas Wrapping Paper
Animal Magnetism
Christmas is getting more characterful. Reindeer, bears, owls, swans and even dachshunds filled the halls at Christmasworld, in designs Home Accents Today described as whimsical, nostalgic and a little sassy. Pinterest calls its version "Wilderkind": animal aesthetics with a delicate touch, with searches for dragonfly nails alone up 145%.
How to style it: match the animal to the person. Then tie a small felt animal ornament into the bow, so the gift comes with a keepsake for the tree.
Tartan Wrapping Paper
Highland Romance
According to Pinterest, searches for the "Scotland highlands aesthetic" are up 465%, one of the biggest jumps in its entire 2026 report. Think misty glens, stone lodges, roaring fires and, of course, tartan. The difference this year is depth: rich heritage tartans and estate plaids rather than simple red and green checks.
How to style it: mix two tartans in the same colour family across your tree and tie them all in forest green velvet ribbon. A small pine cone and berry pick under each bow brings in that Highland-lodge warmth.

House Rule
“Two tartans look curated. Three look like a story. Four start to argue.”
Nutcracker Gift Wrap
Nutcrackercore
Etsy’s holiday trend report named it Nutcrackercore: ballet-inspired romance with gilded opulence, velvet ribbons and jewel tones, with searches for ballet music boxes up 1,000%. It's Christmas as seen from the front row of the ballet: sugar-plum pink, emerald green and a touch of old-world gold.
How to style it: finish with emerald or blush velvet ribbon and tie a tiny gold jingle bell or a mini nutcracker ornament into the bow.

City Christmas Wrapping Paper
City Christmas
When the Selfridges Christmas Shop opened in September, it took its inspiration from the streets of London, New York, Paris and Berlin, complete with "Santa's Bodega", streetlamps and hot dog carts filled with baubles. It's a love letter to Christmas in the city: lit windows, busy streets and snow on the stoop.
How to style it: give every person on your list their own city, and tie with a red and white striped ribbon. A kraft luggage tag makes the gift tag feel like a ticket somewhere.

How to Make Your Gift Wrapping Look Expensive
Whichever trend you choose, these four details do the heavy lifting:
- Choose one statement. Let either the paper or the ribbon be the star, never both.
- Crease everything. Run your thumbnail along every fold. Sharp edges are what separate a considered wrap from a rushed one.
- Use real ribbon. Velvet, silk, grosgrain or satin will always outshine curling ribbon.
- Add one natural or handwritten detail. A sprig of pine, a dried orange slice or a note under the bow.
